Sunoco partners with Earth Day Canada, conservation authorities and community groups to organize tree-planting events in six major cities in late April and early May each year. Through these events, we help increase awareness and take small steps toward restoring and protecting the Earth. The events feature tree planting, fun activities for the family and on-site educational displays focused on the environment and conservation.

Sunoco's Earth Day program has been made possible through donations by the Suncor Energy Foundation. Since 1998, the Foundation has provided more than $2 million to Earth Day Canada events.

Since the inception of the program, more than 86,365 native trees and shrubs have been planted at Sunoco Earth Day events. Sunoco's program will absorb the carbon given off by about 3,455,00 km of car driving every year.

Why is tree-planting the most popular environmental activity? Planting trees is a great way to help the environment as they provide shaded area for recreation, wildlife habitat and help address climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Benefits include:

• A grove of 500 trees will absorb the CO2 produced by a car driven 20,000 kilometers.
• Properly located and managed, trees can reduce energy consumption:
  • shading buildings to reduce air conditioning demand
  • breaking winter winds to lower space heating needs
  • preventing soil erosion to lower the amount of fertilizer needed
  • manipulating snow drifts to reduce winter snow plowing costs and automobile accidents.

Sunoco’s involvement in Earth Day is part of our overall commitment to sustainability, which also includes investing in renewable energy through our wind power projects and making available environmentally-responsible products, like ethanol-blended gasoline.
